The Learning Domains identify the core knowledge and skills that children will need; and reflect the challenging and internationally driven nature of the curriculum and the Provision that delivers it. The roles of language, social and physical development are obviously central to this as they provide the foundations for other knowledge. Equally, immersion in knowledges and skills required for competency in literacy, mathematics and understanding the world through science, history and geography are also present. The arts that specify visual arts, music, dance and drama also form the required content of what children will need to learn in these areas to be rounded expressive citizens.
However, our Curriculum uniquely identifies three additional areas that we consider to be important in delivering a responsible set of knowledges that prepare children for the future.
The world we live in, and our children will grow up onto exists on finite resources and an ever increasing impact on the climate. Children need to be aware of the issues that surround this and begin to consider how this can be addressed and solved. Therefore, a dedicated element of our Learning Domains is Sustainability and Environmental Awareness.
Digital Knowledge and Awareness is also a specific element as children will need to learn how to use technology effectively, safely and to support all the other elements of their learning and development. In a world that is progressively dependent on its own inexorable digitalisation, it is vital that children are able to understand and incorporate it into their lives.
As avowedly International Early Years Provision the nature of cultural identity is highly prominent. This depends partly on a strong sense of self, community, heritage, tradition and nation and partly on being outward facing and ‘internationally minded’. This ensures that children retain a sense of pride and belonging but are also aware of the diversity of society, custom and tradition that exists beyond their direct experience.
